Three heating grants are open in England in 2026: the Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500 towards a heat pump (£9,000 for oil or LPG homes), ECO4 can fully fund a boiler, heat pump or insulation for households on qualifying benefits, and the Warm Homes: Local Grant can fully fund improvements for incomes under £36,000, through your council.

England has the fullest set of the four UK nations. Which one fits you comes down to whether you own the home, your income and whether anyone claims a qualifying benefit. Here is how the three routes work and how to tell which is yours.

The no-questions route: the Boiler Upgrade Scheme

If you own your home in England, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is nearly guaranteed. It takes £7,500 off an air source or ground source heat pump, or £9,000 if you currently heat with oil or LPG, with no income or benefits test at all. Your MCS-certified installer claims the voucher, so you never fill in a government form.

Since April 2026 there is no insulation prerequisite either, a rule a lot of older articles still get wrong.

The fully funded routes: ECO4 and Warm Homes: Local Grant

If someone in the household receives a qualifying benefit such as Universal Credit or Pension Credit, ECO4 can pay for the whole job rather than a fixed amount. If your household income is under £36,000 and your home has an EPC of D to G, the Warm Homes: Local Grant can also fully fund work, applied for through your local council. Not every council area is live yet, so availability depends on your postcode.

Scheme rules and deadlines change, so check now and we will confirm what is currently open for your address.

Where in England this applies

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme and ECO4 apply everywhere in England. The council-run Warm Homes: Local Grant is rolling out area by area, so availability of that one depends on your county. We match homeowners with certified installers across England, including:

Greater London, Greater Manchester, West Midlands, West Yorkshire, Kent, Essex, Surrey, Hampshire, Lancashire, Merseyside, Tyne and Wear, South Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Devon, Cornwall, Norfolk, Cheshire, Staffordshire, and everywhere in between.
