Heating grants in Wales: what you can actually claim

In Wales you can claim the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which pays £7,500 towards a heat pump (£9,000 for oil or LPG homes) with no income test, and ECO4, which can fully fund work for households on qualifying benefits. Wales also has its own scheme, Warm Homes Nest, run by the Welsh Government for low-income households and those with a cold-related health condition.
Wales is covered by the two Great Britain schemes, and it has a Welsh-only scheme on top. That extra option, Warm Homes Nest, is the difference from England, so it is worth knowing which door to knock on.
The schemes at a glance
| Scheme | What it pays | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Boiler Upgrade Scheme | £7,500 off a heat pump, £9,000 for oil or LPG homes | Owner-occupiers and landlords in England and Wales. No income test. |
| ECO4 | Can fully fund the work | Households on qualifying benefits, across Great Britain. |
| Warm Homes Nest (Welsh Government) | Free package of energy efficiency improvements | Low-income households, or those with a health condition made worse by a cold home. |

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme covers Wales too
A common myth is that the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is England-only. It is not. It runs across England and Wales, paying £7,500 towards a heat pump, or £9,000 if you heat with oil or LPG, with no income or benefits test. Your MCS-certified installer claims it for you.
Warm Homes Nest, the Welsh route
Warm Homes Nest is delivered for the Welsh Government and offers free advice to everyone, plus a package of home energy improvements for people on a low income or with a health condition that a cold home makes worse. It can sit alongside the GB schemes rather than instead of them.
Scheme names and rules change, so confirm the current Nest offer before committing to work.
