In Wales you can claim the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which pays £7,500 towards a heat pump (£9,000 for oil or LPG homes) with no income test, and ECO4, which can fully fund work for households on qualifying benefits. Wales also has its own scheme, Warm Homes Nest, run by the Welsh Government for low-income households and those with a cold-related health condition.

Wales is covered by the two Great Britain schemes, and it has a Welsh-only scheme on top. That extra option, Warm Homes Nest, is the difference from England, so it is worth knowing which door to knock on.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme covers Wales too

A common myth is that the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is England-only. It is not. It runs across England and Wales, paying £7,500 towards a heat pump, or £9,000 if you heat with oil or LPG, with no income or benefits test. Your MCS-certified installer claims it for you.

Warm Homes Nest, the Welsh route

Warm Homes Nest is delivered for the Welsh Government and offers free advice to everyone, plus a package of home energy improvements for people on a low income or with a health condition that a cold home makes worse. It can sit alongside the GB schemes rather than instead of them.

Scheme names and rules change, so confirm the current Nest offer before committing to work.

Where in Wales this applies

Cardiff, Swansea, Newport, Wrexham, Gwynedd, Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, Powys, Conwy, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Bridgend, Flintshire, and everywhere in between.

What is the Welsh heating grant called?
Warm Homes Nest, run for the Welsh Government. It gives free energy advice to all, plus funded improvements for low-income households or those with a cold-related health condition.

Possibly, through ECO4 if someone in the household is on a qualifying benefit, or through Warm Homes Nest if you are on a low income. If neither fits, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme still takes £7,500 off a heat pump with no income test.
